Inch By Inch

I am sharing a very cute measuring to the nearest inch activity.  I love to read the book Inch by Inch By: Leo Lionni when I am introducing measurement to the nearest inch, so I thought up a neat idea to go along with the book and get my kiddos excited about learning how to measure.

I took a cute inch worm graphic and made them into all different sizes and placed them randomly around the classroom.  My kiddos were given a recording form and a clipboard and were on a hunt for inch worms (big and small).  They had to use their rulers to measure each inch worm to the nearest inch and record their length.  They had a lot of fun with this and I loved watching my whole class ENGAGED!  After I finish a lesson for the first time I usually think of something that needs to be changed, but this time all was good.  I do think adding some gummy worms for a sweet treat would be neat too or an estimation/measurement activity with gummy worms for an extension…just food for thought.

Our inch worm hunt was a success!

  4. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but other than that, this is fantastic blog. A great read. I will certainly be back.

  6. Man, are you a lifesaver right now. I am a new homeschooling mom, and we are required to read this book and do some activities with it. I am behind on getting the project done and sat down and googled "inch by inch activities", your blog came up, and I clicked and printed. I am one happy homeschooler right now. Thanks a ton for sharing, and yes, especially for free. I will be following you from now on. :)
