We have been busy this week learning all about main idea. We decided it had been way too long since we broke out the construction paper, so we decided to make it fun and creative. We read the book, Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin Pie. I got this as a freebie last year from Scholastic and new this would be a great non-fiction text for this lesson and it fit the season well. We discussed and charted what the book was mostly about and recorded what some of the important details were that we read. The kids have really become pros at this!
We decided that the book was mostly about how pumpkins grow and what they are used for. Here is a sample of one of the kids with their pumpkin scene put together and ready to add the details.
The yellow moon held the main idea and the pumpkins in their patch held the details. They turned out really cute all finished and the kids enjoyed being crafty! I also figured these would make a nice fall display for parent teacher conferences too. Here are some pics of the kiddos hard at work.
