Recycling and Randoms

Our theme this week is recycling and with Earth Day not far away I came up with a plan.  I was browsing one of my favorite teachers, Jessica Meachum and came across her oh so cute classroom igloo.  If you haven’t seen it you must check it out.  She made the whole thing with gallon milk jugs.  My classroom theme is bees, so we are doing a milk jug hive.  My kids are pretty excited about making a cool reading hive out of recycled milk jugs.  I will defiantly post pictures once we have finished.
Here is a picture from Jessica Meachum's classroom to give you an idea.

If anyone else uses Treasures Reading I have created a long u/short u word sort with a eco-friendly theme.  I plan to use this in my small group for word work.

For writing this week we are reading various picture books about taking care of our planet.  I have posted a couple of good picture books below.  We are reading, The Garbage Monster  and making our own garbage monsters out of recycled materials.  Here is a sample of my garbage monster I used as a model.  The students’ will then write to the prompt:  “I don’t want to be a
garbage monster because……” I will post some student pics later this week when we finish!
Both of these are great!

Here are some of their samples

  1. These are adorable! I just found your blog and you have some great ideas. I definitely want to make these! Would you mind sharing your trashcan pattern? Do you give them a template to cut trash faces, etc. from? I looked on amazon for the book- wow $80. It's out of print. I think I'll get The Wartville Wizard one. Thanks for sharing!

  2. No problem. I just added the link to the page so I hope this helps. I also have the writing prompt paper too. Let me know if you need it.

  3. Thanks again, Lauren. Sure, I'd love the writing paper too. Did they just freely make their monster or did they have a template. A lot of the faces seemed the same shape kinda. It just seems if I tell my children to make something, they always come out very small and not like I wanted. If you just gave specific directions if you could just share that. This is just one of the cutest things I've seen! Love your new blog, keep up the great work! =)

  4. I will send you the writing paper on Monday. It is saved on my school computer. I didn't have a template for the monster, but I'm sure you could give them a cardboard circle to trace around for the face. I did have some kiddos make their face super small. They needed a little extra help, so they traced a circle I had.

  5. Lauren, do you still have the writing paper? I think this is such a cute idea and have had the kids saving their "clean" garbage all week for this activity. If you can, I'd love the writing prompt paper.
